Martek's guide on:
How to Survive in the Age of Deregulation

With the fear of deregulation causing many utilities to downsize the number of plant personnel, Martek offers this handy guide for avoiding the next "cut" as well as dealing with the turmoil (or madness) of uncertainty.

Rule #1. Know your stuff. They say "Knowledge is Power." To a large extent, that's true. Knowing your job and being able to perform it is what separates professionals from the wannabes. Take advantage of company education programs whenever you can. Keep up with new standards and technologies and know what's happening in and outside your industry. Don't ever think you're too old to learn. On the contrary, try to learn something new every day.

Rule #2. Communicate. Doing your job is one thing, being able to communicate your usefulness to Management is another. You can do this by explaining to your manager what it is you do and the tools or personnel needed to accomplish the mission. You may never get the tools, people or even recognition from management for your contributions, but there should be no doubt about the role you play in the daily operation of the plant.

Rule #3. Maintain your integrity. It's easy to become bitter or cynical when you're a victim of chance or mismanagement. Don't let it happen. Why? Because the only thing you leave behind is a good name and that's something no one can take away from you. It's the mark of a leader and a professional. Besides, a good attitude is contagious and makes for a better work environment for everyone.

Rule #4. Document. You've told your manager for the umpteenth time that the plant will go to hell in a handbasket unless they (fill in the blank). You've been told for the umpteenth time that there's no money, time, (fill in the blank) to do it. Fine. Now, document it. Make it clear in writing to all those involved that these are your recommendations and you won't stop requesting for action because that's part of your job (See Rules # 1 & 3). If and when the stuff hits the fan, they can point fingers at you, but they can't say you didn't warn them.

Rule #5. Marry the CEO's daughter. Okay, so the likelihood of this happening is slim to none. Still, it couldn't hurt.
